Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit played host to their Western Conference opponent the Erie Otters on Saturday March 1st. In a hard fought physical hockey game Erie defeated Saginaw by a score of 4-2
The Otters notched an early first period goal when Michael Curtis put home a rebound that was assisted by Andre Burakovsky and Dylan Strome two minutes into the first period to go up 1-0. Saginaw struck right back with a goal off the stick of Luke Cairns to tie the game at one that was set up by Andrey Alexeev and Jimmy Lodge thirty seconds later. Erie scored four minutes into the first period to regain the lead at 2-1 when Patrick Murphy netted a goal that was assisted by Quentin Maksimovich. Erie made it a 3-1 game twenty seconds later when Michael Curtis scored his second goal of the period that was once again set up by Andre Burakovsky and Dylan Strome.
Erie benefited from a powerplay with thirteen minutes left in the second period when Brandon Gaunce finished off a systematic passing play set up by Dane Fox and Connor Brown to go up 4-1 on Saginaw. Saginaw capitalized on their own powerplay when Jimmy Lodge snuck a rebound shot past Erie goaltender Oscar Dansk for his eighteenth goal of the season that was assisted by Eric Locke and Jesse Graham with less than two minutes remaining in the second period.
A period full of chippy hockey and stifling defense gave way to a scoreless twenty minutes resulting in the game ending with a score of 4-2 in favor of Erie.
