
Steelheads add two, cut six

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads training camp is in full swing and the team announced today it has added centerman Kurt MacSweyn and defenseman Mike Gabinet to its training camp roster. In addition, Steelheads Head Coach Derek Laxdal has released six players from their training camp tryout including, goalie Tamio Strenhenberg, forwards Kristian Jefkins, Riley McTaggert, Darek Ceglarski and Carter Thomson, and defenseman Sean Regan.
MacSweyn is a 24-year-old who played the last two seasons with Saint Mary's University in Halifax during which time he scored a point-a-game - 51 points (24 goals, 24 assists) in 51 games. The six-foot-one, 195-pound forward played four years in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) prior to his college career.
Coach Laxdal said of the addition, "MacSweyn came out of St. Mary's University - he's a skilled forward that was highly sought after by many ECHL hockey clubs. I'm looking forward to having him come on board."
Gabinet, also 24, was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in round 8, #237 overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The six-foot-three, 185-pound blueliner played four seasons of NCAA hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and last season in Finland.
After practice today, the Steelheads left for McCall to finish out camp at the Manchester Ice and Events Centre. The team will practice at the mountain arena from October 11th through October 15th, and will include a preseason game on Friday, October 14th at 7:30 pm against the Utah Grizzlies and a Steelheads' intrasquad game on Saturday, October 15th at 4:00 pm, presented by NAPA Auto Parts. All practices are open to the public and are free. Tickets for the preseason games may be purchased from the Manchester Ice and Events Centre at 208.634.3570 or by visiting the Manchester Centre's Will Call window. Children under three get in free.
