State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, NY - Jake Stone homered and Rowan Wick drove in two more runs as the State College Spikes took an early lead and built from there to a 7-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs on Thursday night at Dwyer Stadium.

The win enabled State College (13-7) to take sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, breaking a tie with Batavia (12-8). The Spikes also ran their road record to 8-3 on the season, the best mark in the NYPL.

Stone's solo home run to right field off Muckdogs starter Jorgan Cavanerio (1-1) gave State College a 4-1 lead, and Collin Radack delivered a two-run single in the same frame to extend the Spikes' lead to 6-1.

Wick, who leads the NYPL with 27 runs batted in this year, brought in the first State College run with a base hit in the first inning, then knocked in the last with a groundout in the sixth. The North Vancouver, BC native smashed his team record 11th home run of the year on Wednesday, and followed it by collecting two of the Spikes' 14 hits in Thursday's game. Wick increased his batting average to .415 for the year.

Andrew Sohn added to the Spikes' onslaught with his first three-hit game in a State College uniform, while Alex De Leon and Danny Diekroeger joined Stone and Radack in producing multiple hits as well.

The Spikes also receive a strong pitching effort, with Daniel Poncedeleon, Trey Nielsen (3-0) and Jeff Barkley (1) each tossing three innings. The trio held the Muckdogs to four hits on the game, with the only run scoring on a double-play ball in the second inning.

Poncedeleon started and gave up the lone Batavia run on one hit while striking out three batters. Nielsen picked up the win after yielding two hits and recording one strikeout. Barkley, after earning his first professional win in Batavia on June 23, got his first professional save after allowing one hit and two walks while striking out three batters.

Batavia starter Jorgan Cavanerio (1-1) took the loss after giving up six runs on ten hits, four walks and a hit batsman over four innings on the mound. Cavanerio also tallied a strikeout.
