-SPIKES LOOK TO BREAK TIE ATOP DIVISION WITH BATAVIA: The State College Spikes finish a three-game road series at Dwyer Stadium tonight against the Batavia Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. The Spikes and Muckdogs are now tied for the lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, and the two teams meet in their third series against each other within the season's first three weeks. After the completion of this series, State College and Batavia are not scheduled to meet again until Augsut 29-30 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes won a pair of games at Batavia two weekends ago. The Muckdogs hold the advantage in the all-time series, 44-43, and have won 23 of 43 meetings at Dwyer Stadium.
-LAST NIGHT: In his 19th game with the State College Spikes, Rowan Wick broke the club's single-season home-run record with his 11th blast of the season, a three-run shot to right field in the eighth inning, and the Spikes defeated the Batavia Muckdogs, 9-3, on Wednesday night at Dwyer Stadium.
Wick broke the record set by David Washington, who hit 10 home runs in 72 regular season games just last year. Prior to Washington, no Spike had hit more than eight home runs in a year.
The North Vancouver, BC native took the first pitch he saw from Batavia reliever Connor Overton deep over the right-field wall for the record-breaker. It was Wick's third home run of the year against the Muckdogs, and his second of the year at Dwyer Stadium. Alex De Leon also hit his fifth home run of the year for the Spikes, and his fourth at Dwyer Stadium, in the fifth inning.
-PONCEDELEON SEEKS STRONG START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon gets his second start of the season for the Spikes tonight in his third appearance as a professional. Poncedeleon, the Cardinals' ninth-round draft choice out of Embry-Riddle University in Florida, made his pro debut on June 20 at Jamestown, allowing one run in two innings. The 6'4" righty then pitched two innings of relief at Williamsport on Friday for his first professional victory, allowing one unearned run in the process. Poncedeleon was named Second-Team NAIA All-American and First Team All-Sun Conference this past spring after going 9-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 14 starts for Embry-Riddle.
-CAVANERIO GETS BALL FOR MUCKDOGS: Right-hander Jorgan Cavanerio makes the start for Batavia tonight. Cavanerio has gone at least five innings in every start, with six-inning outings in each of his last two appearances. Last time out, the native of Cagua, Venezuela allowed six runs, five of them earned, on eight hits and a hit batsman while striking out one. Cavanerio has yielded just one walk this season, with 12 strikeouts under his belt. The righty has allowed opposing batters a .324 average this season. Last year, Cavanerio went 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA in nine appearances, eight of them starts.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award today. Wick has continued his torrid start the 2014 season, with his club record 11 homers already rewriting the Spikes' history books just 19 games gone on the year. The slugger also has at least one homer in every Spikes series this season. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he is leading the league with 25 RBI, and his .403 batting average is second only to Connecticut's Michael Gerber.
-SPIKE MARKS: Infielder Darren Seferina was added to the Spikes' roster on Sunday after initially being placed on the GCL Cardinals roster...The Curacao native reached base four times on Tuesday, and is 5-for-11 (.455) at the plate in his first three professional games ...Will Anderson is seventh in the New York-Penn League with a 1.06 ERA...Wick is homering once every 5.64 at-bats, while teammate Alex De Leon has a long ball once every 11.4 at-bats...The Spikes lead the league with 104 runs scored as a team, and their 2.69 team ERA is second in the NYPL...State College's +30 run differential is the largest in the league, followed by Connecticut's +19 mark
