Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - For the first time since 2012, Kevin Gausman started on the mound for the IronBirds. He got off to a hot start, retiring the first three batters he faced while consistently throwing the ball in the mid to high 90's, including hitting 98 and 99 MPH several times.
Despite the strong first inning from Gausman, the Yankees scored one run in the top of the second. After a DH Ty McFarland groundout, C Luis Torrens singled with a blooper into shallow right field. Gausman then walked RF Nathan Mikolas. Up next was 1B Connor Spencer who hit a grounder to 1B Hector Veloz, who then threw Mikolas out at second, but then SS Austin Pfeiffer made an errant throw that got past Gausman at first, which allowed Torrens to score, making it 1-0 Yankees. Gausman then forced a fly out to end the inning. That was the last pitch he would throw for the night.
The IronBirds got a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. After a Veloz fly out to right, RHP Jordan Cote walked RF Oswill Lartiguez. With LF Jamill Moquete at bat, Lartiguez stole second. After Moquete struck out, 2B Justin Viele singled up the middle, scoring Lartiguez from second.
The IronBirds added another four runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 5-1 lead. After a 3B Frederico Castagnini single to left center, C Jonah Heim hit a line drive into the corner of right field for a double, moving Castagnini to third. CF Jay Gonzalez the singled on a ground ball that hit off of Yankee pitcher Connor Mullee, scoring Castagnini and moving Heim to third. Pfeiffer then singled, scoring Heim and moving Gonzalez to second. Then with Murphy at the plate, Mullee threw two wild pitches in a row. The first moved the base runners to second and third, and the second one scored Heim. Mullee then struck out Murphy and Veloz, but then gave up a single to Lartiguez, which scored Pfeiffer. Mullee finally ended the inning with a Moquete groundout.
The Yankees responded in the sixth by scoring six runs of their own to reclaim the lead at 7-5. After an CF Austin Aune walk, LF Chris Breen singled down the first base, scoring Aune who had stolen second on the previous pitch. McFarland then singled up the middle, moving Breen to second. Tarpley then walked Torrens to load up the bases before striking out Mikolas. Spencer then singled to the mound, scoring Breen. Tarpley was then relieved by RHP Stefan Crichton, who gave up a three run triple to 3B Renzo Martini. After striking out 2B Jose Javier, Crichton gave up a single to SS Thairo Estrada that scored Martini from third. Crichton then struck out Aune to end the inning.
The Yankees padded their lead with another two runs in the eighth. After RHP Derrick Bleeker relieved Crichton, he walked Mikolas and then gave up a single to Spencer. After a strike out, Bleeker then threw a wild pitch that advanced the base runners to third and second. Javier then hit a double to the corner of right field to score both runners. Bleeker then struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
The IronBirds were unable to reclaim the lead and fell 9-5, dropping them to 2-17 on the season and 1-9 at home.
Mullee (1-0, 3.00) got the win while Tarpley (0-1, 7.98) took the loss for the IronBirds.
