Spinners Game Notes, July 3
July 3, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
The Spinners take on the Connecituct Tigers in the final game of a brief three-game homestand. First pitch from Simon Mercedes is set for 7:05pm.
Spinners Slog Through Night: It was a wet, hot night at LeLacheur Park and the Spinners and Tigers compounded the misery with a game that took 3:21 to play following a 28 minute weather delay...The Tigers ultimately emerged on top, taking an early 6-0 lead and holding on for a 9-4 win, taking advantage of walks, wild pitches and errors, both mental and otherwise, by the Spinners in the win.
Betts Gives, Betts Takes : In a sequence that could only be described as baseball karma, 3B Jordan Betts made a mental gaffe, losing track of a high pop fly in the infield that would have the third out of the inning only to have it fall between him and SS Mauricio Dubon on the infield grass, leading directly to three fourth inning runs against RHP Enfember Martinez...In the law of averages, Betts himself was the beneficiary of a misplayed pop fly, receiving a double that led to a Spinners run in the sixth inning.
Piggy Back: Tonight ' s game will feature a piggy-back rotation from the Spinners as the team looks to get innings for rehabbing RHP Simon Mercedes as well as the game ' s scheduled starter, RHP Jason Garcia...Mercedes, who last pitched June 4 for the Salem Red Sox, will start with Garcia coming on in relief...The set-up will be a relief for the Spinners bullpen, which saw four relievers used in Wednesday ' s loss.
Debut to Forget: RHP Brandon Show, a 38th round selection out of San Diego State, made his professional debut to start the fifth inning Wednesday night ... .Unfortunately for Show, it was a debut to forget, as the right-hander allowed a lead-off triple to 3B Steven Fuentes...After a groundout scored Fuentes, Show walked the next four batters, walking in a run, before LHP Rob Smorol came on in relief to retire the final two batters, leaving the bases loaded.
Quarter Point Check-In: Through 19 games, the Spinners have officially reached the quarter point of the 2014 New York-Penn League season...At 10-9, the Spinners find themselves 1.5 games out of the Stedler Division lead and 2.0 games back in the early season Wild Card race...Statistically, the team ranks fifth in team batting average (.248) and second in team home runs (13)...Spinners pitchers meanwhile rank 11th in team ERA (4.17), something that can perhaps be traced to a league high 83 walks.
Personal Highs : From an individual standpoint, OF Nick Longhi ranks third in the NYPL with a .358 (19-for-53) batting average, while RHP Carlos Pinales leads the NYPL with five saves, tying for the league lead with six games finished.
Procyshen Ready : C Jordan Procyshen will make his professional debut for the Spinners Thursday night, batting ninth and doing the catching...A product of Northern Kentucky University by way of Calgary, Procyshen was a 14th round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.
Major League Accomplishment : Spinners alumni are inching closer to another Major League milestone following OF Mookie Betts first Major League home run Wednesday night...Betts home run was the 999th by a former Spinner at the Major League level meaning the next home run will be a milestone mark.
