Toronto Argonauts News Release

Toronto, ON – The Toronto Argonauts today released the following statement pertaining to the proposed York University Stadium:

"Our relationship with York University was marked by respect, goodwill and professionalism. That's why the decision to remain at the Rogers Centre was so difficult.

"But ultimately, the Toronto Argonauts' highest commitment is to its fans, and indeed to the larger community. The franchise is the oldest professional football club in North America. It has been in the hearts of Toronto football fans for 132 years. We have a special obligation to ensure that those fans and their families—and those 132 years from now—will always be able to enjoy Argonauts football.

"That means securing the long-term financial health of the club. Our new agreement with the Rogers Centre helps to ensure that.

"We regret that the proposed stadium will not go ahead. But we respect that York University has to fulfill its obligations just as we must fulfill ours to our fans."

"Our fans have spoken and have supported our decision. Since announcing that we will remain at Rogers Centre, only 16 individuals representing 38 season tickets from our base of close to 10,000 season and corporate tickets have asked for refunds, while 417 new season tickets have been sold."

The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 15 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
