Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB â With training camp set to begin in a little more than two weeks, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to stock up on offensive talent.
The latest offensive additions include offensive lineman Pete Campion and wide receiver Elgin Hicks, who were both officially signed by the club today.
Campion (6-4, 305, North Dakota State '01 DOB: Dec. 3, 1979 in Fergus Falls, Minn.) joins the Bombers after having spent parts of the past three seasons in the NFL.
He was originally a 7th round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2002 and also spent time with the St. Louis Rams, Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Raiders. He attended training camp with the Raiders last year, but missed the entire season after suffering a calf muscle injury. He was an All-North Central Conference first-team selection at NDSU.
Campion is an athletic big man who lettered in wrestling at Fergus Falls High School.
"He's a very good athlete," Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman said. "He's very sound technically. And he has experience in the NFL which we like."
Hicks (5-11, 178, South Florida '03 DOB: June 13, 1981 in Port Charlotte, Fla.) spent part of last season on the practice roster of the Indianapolis Colts after signing with the NFL team as a free agent.
The speedy receiver was a standout during his three seasons with South Florida Bulls of the USA Conference. The former Superior Prep All-American hauled in 28 catches for 451 yards and 7 TDs in 2003 with the Bulls and had at least one catch in 10 of his team's 11 games that season.
"He's a speed guy and he's a good route runner," Taman said. "He's a good young talent who we are looking forward to seeing in camp."
