-SPIKES LOOK FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN: The State College Spikes seek back-to-back wins for the first time in 2011 when they face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the second game of a three-game set. Tonight's game will also be the fifth straight meeting between the two teams this week. The Spikes are 25-29 all-time against the Scrappers, with a 15-11 mark all-time at home against the Indians affiliate.
-LAST GAME: Matt Benedict earned his first pro win with a strong five innings of mound work, and Brian Sharp's two-run single in the fifth inning helped propel the State College Spikes to a 5-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to snap a four-game losing streak on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Benedict allowed his first earned run as a professional pitcher in the fifth inning on a wild pitch, but also yielded just four hits and struck out three over five innings. Samuel Gonzalez had an RBI triple and scored two runs for the Spikes.
-SPIKES SEND HAFNER TO MOUND: Right-hander Ryan Hafner heads back to the hill for his third start of the year tonight for State College. Hafner, originally slated for the start on Wednesday before last week's rain caused rotation changes, has not allowed a run or walk this season in two starts, and has notched six strikeouts. The Lee's Summit, MO native gave up four hits and struck out four over four innings against Jamestown in his last start.
-NIXON GETS BALL FOR SCRAPPES: Mahoning Valley goes to right-hander Rob Nixon for his third start on the mound this year. Nixon earned his first professional win with five shutout innings on Saturday at Auburn, allowing three hits and notching his first five strikeouts of his pro career. The Adelphi (NY) product was chosen by the Indians in the 46th round of this year's draft, going 11-2 with a 1.43 ERA in 14 appearances this past spring.
