Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds look to get back in the win column tonight at Richmond County Ballpark against the Staten Island Yankees (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Yankees). The IronBirds fell last night to the Yankees 9-1. The loss was the IronBirds' second in-a-row, and 11th in 12 tries. Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Aberdeen's bullpen collapsed, surrendering six runs on three hits and four walks. IronBirds' left fielder Chris Clinton also dropped a fly ball, making matters worse. Aberdeen will have left-hander Matt Drummond on the bump tonight. He's looking to rebound from his last start, in which he lasted just 1.2 innings. He'll go up against right-hander Wilton Rodriguez.

Wynston's Walks

IronBirds catcher Wynston Sawyer will play this whole season as a 19-year-old. You wouldn't know it from his approach at the plate. Sawyer is currently leading the IronBirds in walks (8) and on base percentage (.395). He's also tied for the team lead in homers (2) with Jeremy Nowak, who has been promoted to the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds.

Glynn Joins 'Birds

Centerfielder Glynn Davis made his IronBirds debut last night in Staten Island. The 19-year-old went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. A Baltimore-native, Davis signed as an undrafted free agent following his freshman year at Catonsville Community College. Through six games in the Gulf Coast League, Davis was hitting .436 with a home run and two runs batted in.

Free Passes

The IronBirds staff is struggling with its command early in the season. The team has surrendered a league-leading 68 walks in 115.2 innings of work. The next closest team is the Lowell Spinners, who have walked 50 batters. Consequently, Aberdeen holds the second-worst team-ERA in the league (4.05).

Moving in Opposite Directions

The IronBirds have gotten off to one of the worst starts in franchise history. Making it worse, the Yankees currently possess the best record in the NYPL. They are now winners of a league-best nine straight games, and hold an eight-and-a-half game lead over the IronBirds.
