Jamestown Jammers News Release

JAMESTOWN - The Jamestown Jammers bats were silenced on Thursday night as the Batavia Muckdogs won, 2-0, at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.

Jose Almarante tossed six innings to earn the win for Batavia as he allowed just one hit.

He also struck out three and walked none to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Batavia jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Mike O'Neill and Casey Rasmus had back-to-back singles to start the game then the pair moved up a base after Roberto Reyes grounded out. O'Neill tried to score on a grounder to third, but Ryan Goetz threw him out at the plate to keep the Muckdogs off the board. Joe Bergman would follow with a single to left center to plate the only run Batavia would need.

It looked like the Jammers would mount a threat in the bottom of the first as Pedro Mendoza singled with one out. However, after Mendoza's base hit, Almarante would send down the final 17 batters he faced to keep Jamestown scoreless.

In the fifth inning, Batavia would tack on an insurance run thanks to a pair of errors. Juan Castillo belted a ground-rule double to right field then Yunier Castillo reached on a fielding error by shortstop Yefri Perez. Jamestown center fielder Brent Keys would fire a strike to home plate on the play, but the ball got away from catcher Austin Barnes to allow Juan Castillo to score.

It looked like a Batavia reliever might cough up the Muckdogs' advantage for the third time in four games when Jonathan Cornelius came on in the seventh inning. Mendoza connected for a another single to start the inning; however, he was left at first again as Cornelius would send down the next three hitters in order.

Jamestown tried to rally again in the ninth as Keys reached base with a one-out single to bring the tying run to the plate, but closer Corey Baker got Mendoza to bounce into a game- ending double play to send the Jammers to their second straight loss and earn his first save.

Tom Peale was the hard-luck loser for the Jammers. He went five innings and gave up two runs, only one earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Greg Nappo tossed three shutout innings, and Kenneth Toves worked a scoreless ninth.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game set on Friday with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Diethrick Park.
