Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Staten Island, NY - In front of a near-capacity crowd at Richmond County Ballpark, the Aberdeen IronBirds dropped their third straight game Thursday evening, against the Staten Island Yankees by a final score of 6-5.
The IronBirds took a one-run lead in the second. With one man out, Connor Narron reached on a walk. Riley Hornback singled. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Chris Clinton knocked in Narron on a ground out to second, giving the IronBirds the early lead.
Aberdeen made it a two-run game in the third. With two men out, Mychal Givens reached on a single. Joe Velleggia knocked him in on an RBI-triple off the right-field wall, making it 2-0.
Staten Island tied it up in the bottom of the third. Jhorge Liccien reached on a single and Bobby Rinard doubled, putting two in scoring position with nobody out. Mason Williams grounded out to second, scoring Liccien. Cito Culver singled, knocking in Rinard and tying the game at two.
The Yankees struck for three more runs in the fifth inning. With two men down, Angelo Gumbs reached on a single. Zach Wilson knocked him in with an RBI-double. Reymond Nunez then stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run homer to left field, making it 5-2.
In the sixth inning, the Yankees scored their sixth and final run. Ali Castillo lofted a fly ball to right field. Martin Serrata misplayed it into a triple. Rinard knocked in Castillo with a single.
The IronBirds made things interesting in the ninth. Chris Clinton was hit by a pitch. Then a batter later, Glynn Davis singled to center. Yankees center fielder Williams booted the ball, allowing Davis to get to second and Clinton to third. Austin Knight chopped a ball back to the mound. Pitcher Michael Recchia threw it home, but Liccien forgot it wasn't a force play and didn't apply a tag. He then threw it wildly to first base, allowing two runs to score and Knight to get to third. Givens knocked him in with a ground out to second. With two outs, Velleggia struck out swinging to end the ball game.
Vidal Nuno (3-0) pitched five scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Zach Petersime (0-1) took the loss. Brandon Pinder (4) got the final two outs in the ninth to notch the save.
The IronBirds will try to avoid being swept at Staten Island Friday evening. Aaron Wirsch (0-1, 3.00) will get the start for Aberdeen. He'll go up against fellow left-hander Evan DeLuca (0-0, 2.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
