-SPIKES FINISH SEASON-OPENING SERIES WITH WILLIAMSPORT: The State College Spikes complete the first phase of the 2014 SawBuck Series tonight as they face the Williamsport Crosscutters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Tonight marks the 100th matchup of the Spikes and Crosscutters, with Williamsport holding a 51-48 lead in the all-time series. State College is 27-23 all-time when playing the Crosscutters at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park. The Spikes are 10-5 against WIlliamsport over the past two seasons.
-LAST NIGHT: Williamsport Crosscutters starter David Whitehead held the State College Spikes without a hit over his six innings on the mound, and Nick Thompson's first professional home run was one of just two hits for the Spikes in an 8-2 loss to the Crosscutters on Sunday night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field.
Thompson's homer was a two-run shot in the ninth that thwarted Williamsport's shutout bid. Rowan Wick halted Williamsport's try for a combined no-hitter in the seventh with a single to left field off of reliever Frank Rivas.
Whitehead struck out five and recorded 14 consecutive outs to finish off his outing for the Crosscutters. The right-hander allowed only two baserunners during his time on the hill, both via walks. Whitehead, the 34th-round draft choice of the Phillies in 2013, did not see any professional action last season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery.
-MARTINEZ GETS START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Dailyn Martinez gets the ball tonight for State College. Martinez pitched for the Rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals last year, going 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA over 12 starts comprising 63 1/3 innings. A native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, Martinez posted a 1.72 ERA in six home starts at Johnson City, and held left-handed hitters to a .173 average. The righty also saw time with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals in 2012, where he put up a 3.18 ERA but went 1-5, taking the loss in each of his last five decisions that season.
-WILLIAMSPORT SENDS SANCHEZ TO THE HILL: Right-hander Feliberto Sanchez makes the start for the Crosscutters tonight. Sanchez spent all of the 2013 season with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Phillies, finishing fourth in the GCL with 54 2/3 innings pitched over 12 appearances, 10 of them starts. A native of Sabana Grande de Palenque in the Dominican Republic, Sanchez compiled a 3.12 ERA on the road as opposed to a 5.02 mark at home in 2013, with left-handed hitters putting up a .333 average against him overall.

Athletic trainer Dan Martin and Strength and Conditioning Coach Dan Paugh also come back to their posts for a second consecutive season. Five 2013 Spikes will also resume their time in State College, including pitchers Jacob Booden, Josh Lucas and Jeff Rauh.
