BURLINGTON, VT --- The Connecticut Tigers scored all three of their runs over the first four innings and held on for a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Lake Monsters in Vermont's home opener Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Tigers got an RBI single from Orvin Tovar off Vermont starter Jose Torres in the top of the first inning, then added a Rashad Brown RBI single in the second for a 2-0 lead. Franklin Navarro led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Steven Negron sac fly. Navarro's leadoff double was the Tigers sixth over the first four innings, but Connecticut would not get another base hit until two outs in the ninth inning.

The Lake Monsters were able to put two runners on base in three of the first five innings and had a leadoff double in the sixth, but were unable to get a runner across the plate. Vermont finally got on the board in the seventh with three straight one-out singles to load the bases and a Scott Masik RBI forceout.

Vermont cut the deficit to a run in the eighth as Justin Higley (2-for-4 with a double) led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Gabriel Santana RBI infield single to second. Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez struckout two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

Torres (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings to take the loss, while reliever Lee Sosa struckout five in four scoreless innings. Santana, Brett Vertigan and Dayton Alexander each had two hits for Vermont (2-2), which lost its home opener for the second time in the last three years. Cesar Burgos (1-0) allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for Connecticut (2-2).

The two teams will wrap up the quick two-game series at Centennial Field on Tuesday night starting at 7:05 pm. It is Chittenden County Saves Night brought to you by CASH Coalition and Vermont Higher Education Investment Plan. The first 250 kids (12 & under) will receive a free Piggy Bank.
