Lowell Spinners News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats fought off an early 3-1 deficit, scoring single runs in the sixth, eighth and then won in the game on a walkoff base on balls in the ninth, sending the Lowell Spinners to their third straight loss 4-3 on Monday night.

The game was scoreless until Lowell (1-3) had a threat going in the fifth as Raymel Flores doubled with one out, but was caught in a double play as Bryan Hudson lined out to center and Flores was caught heading to third.

Tri-City (3-1) then took an early lead in the bottom half of the inning as rightfielder Ariel Ovando singled to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by second baseman Alex Hernandez.

The Spinners scored all their runs in the top half of the sixth as Deiner Lopez doubled to lead off the inning and Nick Longhi followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Lopez and tying the game. After Mike Meyers grounded out to put Longhi on third, Jordan Betts followed with an RBI single to push the Spinners ahead. Nick Moore singled to put Betts on second, and after an out, David Sopilka stroked a single to left, scoring Betts who was running on the play.

The ValleyCats loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on reliever Emfember Martinez, but he was able to work out of the jam by allowing just one run on a wild pitch.

Tri-City then tied the game in the eighth inning off Ellis Jiminez, who joined the Spinners on the road from the Greenville Drive, on a sacrifice fly. In the ninth, Jiminez loaded the bases and could not find the plate, walking in the winning run to end the game.

Lowell starter Randy Perez gave the team a solid start in his 2014 debut, tossing five strong innings, allowing just the one run on three hits. He struck out three and walked two. Martinez threw one inning before giving way to Jimenez who ended up with the loss.

Flores led the team with two hits as each Spinner starter reached base at least once, but once again, leaving runners on was an issue for the team in the first week, as eight Spinners baserunners were stranded tonight.

Dioscar Romero, (0-0, 0.00), who pitched in last Thursday's exhibition game against the Nashua Silver Knights, gets the start tomorrow morning to finish the brief two-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on a special Education Day.
