-SPIKES HIT THE ROAD WITH WIN STREAK ON THE LINE: The State College Spikes head to Falcon Park tonight to finish a two-game mini-series against the Auburn Doubledays. The Spikes have won six straight stretching back to a pair of road wins at Batavia July 2 and 3. The Spikes and Doubledays are meeting for the second time this season after State College exclusively faced Williamsport, Batavia and Jamestown over the first 23 games of the season. The Doubledays are 3-7 over their last ten games. All-time, State College is 39-42 against Auburn, with an 19-22 record in games played at Falcon Park.
-LAST NIGHT: Nick Thompson's three-run homer in the third inning scored the only runs for the State College Spikes, but they were all the Spikes needed to run their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Monday night at Falcon Park.
Thompson slugged an 0-1 pitch from Auburn starter Matt Derosier over the 20-foot-high left-center field wall to provide the first scoring of the game. It was the second home run of the season for the Cardinals' 2014 eighth-round draft choice out of William & Mary, and upped his RBI total to 18, good for third place in the New York-Penn League.
State College starter Dewin Perez yielded both Auburn runs, but retired ten batters in a row at one point as he went a season-long 6 1/3 innings on the mound for the Spikes. Perez gave up five hits and struck out five batters in the win.
Trey Nielsen came on for Perez with runners on first and second and one out in the seventh and elicited a double play to end the inning. Nielsen allowed only one hit the rest of the way as he tossed a scoreless 2 2/3 innings for his first professional save.
-SPIKES SEND BAEZ TO HILL TONIGHT: Right-hander Fernando Baez makes his third start and seventh appearance of the year for State College tonight. Baez pitched a season-long 4 1/3 innings against Batavia last time out, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, three walks and a hit batsman. The hard-throwing right struck out five in the outing. Baez has made his last three appearances on the road, striking out 12 and walking seven during that time. The native Dominican has allowed opposing hitters just a .098 batting average this year.
-VAN ORDEN GETS START FOR AUBURN: Right-hander Drew Van Orden makes the start for the Doubledays tonight in his second appearance with Auburn and fourth as a professional. Van Orden, the Nationals' fifth-round draft choice this year, went 6-5 with a 3.19 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings at Duke University this past spring. In his first Doubledays outing, the Manhattan Beach, CA native allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks to take the loss against Mahoning Valley on Thursday. Van Orden also made two appearances for the GCL Nationals in June, allowing two runs over five innings while striking out seven and walking none.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award on Wednesday and set the Spikes' single-season home run record with his 11th homer later that night. Wick has continued his torrid start to the year, although he has gone homerless in the four games he has played since breaking the franchise record. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he added to his league-leading total with his 28th RBI of the year on Sunday, and his .395 batting average is now leading the league.
-SPIKE MARKS: Infielder Robelys Reyes returned to the Spikes last night after five games with Single-A Peoria, going 1-for-4 and scoring a run as the starting shortstop...Sunday, 2007 Spikes Pitcher of the Year Tony Watson became the second former Spike to earn a berth in the Major League All-Star Game, as he was named to the NL squad...Watson follows in the footsteps of Allen Craig, who was named to last year's NL squad after playing for the Spikes in 2006...Wick is homering once every 6.91 at-bats...The Spikes' 2.75 team ERA is second in the league behind Hudson Valley (2.54)...Jacob Booden's .089 opponents' batting average is third among NYPL relievers
