Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Double Header Split
The Aberdeen IronBirds and Staten Island Yankees split a double header last night. The Yankees walked off winners, 3-2, in the opening game, while the IronBirds powered their way to a 4-1 win in the night cap. In the opener, Austin Anderson collected his first professional hit, one of three Aberdeen hits in the game. Anderson's double in the fifth inning scored Riley Palmer and at the time tied the game at two. However, the Yankees would get three consecutive singles with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off win. In the third inning of the nightcap, Anderson followed a Jay Gonzalez double with one of his own, scoring Gonzalez. Anderson scored later in the inning on a bases loaded walk. Two innings later, Hector Veloz homered to left field with Palmer on base, and the IronBirds would go on to win, 4-1.
Bill Fantastic in Game Two Start
Augey Bill made his third start and fourth appearance on the season last night in game two. He pitched four innings, allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out one. The hit that he allowed was followed by the walk, and those came with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. He retired the first eight Yankees he faced, and, after allowing the two base runners, retired the final four hitters as well.
Winning with Home Runs
Game two last night marked the first time this season the IronBirds won a game in which they hit a home run. Hector Veloz's two run shot to left field gave the IronBirds some breathing room and doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth. It was the IronBirds' eighth home run as a team, and they are now 1-6 in games they hit a home run.
On the Mound Tonight...
Aberdeen will send Stephen Tarpley to the mound tonight. This will be Tarpley's fourth start of the season (five total appearances). Last time out, he pitched against the Yankees in a relief appearance at Ripken Stadium on July 2nd. He ended up taking the loss, as he went 2.1 innings, allowed three hits, and five runs (all earned). He walked two and hit two batters, striking out four. The IronBirds would end up losing that game, 9-5. The Yankees will counter with Jordan Cote. Cote's last outing came against the IronBirds the same day that Tarpley last pitched. Cote threw four innings, allowed seven hits and four runs. He is 0-0 and has a 7.98 ERA.
