Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Staten Island, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, beating the Staten Island Yankees 9-2. It marked the second time on the road trip that the IronBirds scored seven runs in a single inning, after scoring seven runs in the fourth inning Saturday in Brooklyn. Aberdeen finishes the road trip with a 4-2 record.

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. IronBirds' starter Stephen Tarpley allowed a one out walk to Jose Javier and that was followed by consecutive singles to load the bases. Connor Spencer then sent a fly ball to deep left field that was good enough to score Javier from third, and the Yankees led 1-0 after one inning.

Staten Island increased their lead in the fourth. They loaded the bases with two outs against Tarpley, chasing the IronBirds' starter from the game. Nik Nowottnick came on and threw a wild pitch on his first pitch of the game. It allowed Devyn Bolasky to score from third and it made the score 2-0 Staten Island. Nowottnick would induce a ground out to get out of the jam.

Aberdeen scored seven runs in the top of the fifth, breaking open the game. Austin Pfeiffer led off the inning with an infield single, and the hit parade was on. After a Jay Gonzalez single, Justin Viele put a bunt down, but the throw to first was errant, and Pfeiffer was able to score. Gonzalez and Viele moved up to third and second respectively. Austin Anderson then hit a two run single, giving Aberdeen a 3-2 lead. After loading the bases with another two singles, Jamill Moquete worked a walk to bring in another run. Tanner Murphy then stroked a two run single, making the score 6-2 IronBirds. All of that happened without the Yankees recording an out. Aberdeen got one more run in the inning when, with Moquete on third and Steve Wilkerson on first, Wilkerson intentionally got caught in a run down, allowing Moquete to trot on home, and giving Aberdeen a 7-2 lead.

The IronBirds would get a run in the sixth after Hector Veloz hit an RBI triple to the left center field gap, scoring Gonzalez, and Moquete would score again in the seventh when Gonzalez hit an RBI single of his own, making it 9-2 Aberdeen.

Nik Nowottnick earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and one walk, striking out four.

Aberdeen returns home to open up a six game home stand. The Batavia Muckdogs come to town tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled at 7:05 p.m.
