-SPIKES FINISH SERIES AGAINST MUCKDOGS: Tonight, the State College Spikes continue their 10th Season as they face the Batavia Muckdogs for the third time this season. The matchup is the last game of a three-game series between the two teams at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and is part of a slate of 12 meetings between the two clubs during the 2015 season. State College is 46-46 against Batavia since 2006, with a 25-23 mark against the Muckdogs in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes are now 13-9 over their last 22 games after starting the season 1-5.
-LAST GAME: Leobaldo Pina produced three hits for the State College Spikes, but a four-run third from the Batavia Muckdogs was too much to overcome as the Spikes dropped a 5-2 decision on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Pina delivered his third game with three or more hits on the season, with a trio of singles and a run scored. However, the Muckdogs' early outburst proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Brad Haynal's bases-loaded single plated the game's first run, and Korey Dunbar followed with a two-run double one batter later. Eric Fisher's sacrifice fly completed the scoring in the inning and staked Batavia to a 4-0 lead. State College scratched out a run in the fifth on Craig Aikin's RBI single to bring in Jose Godoy, and another in the sixth when Pina came home on Cole Lankford's single to the right side.
-CROSS ON THE MOUND FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Carson Cross gets the ball for State College tonight in his fourth professional appearance. Cross tossed four innings, the most for a single outing in his career, and allowed just one unearned run on three hits while striking out one. The UConn product earned his first professional win two appearances ago when he faced the minimum in three one-hit innings of relief at Auburn on July 6. Cross earned Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American honors this past spring with the Huskies, and was drafted by the Cardinals in the 14th round this year.
-MUCKDOGS GO WITH JACOME ON HILL: Left-hander Justin Jacome gets the start for Batavia in his fifth professional appearance. The Marlins' 2015 fifth-round draft choice out of UC-Santa Barbara, Jacome allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings against Williamsport last time out in a no-decision. The Fontana, CA native is making his first road outing tonight since his professional debut on June 25 at Williamsport. Jacome went 7-5 this season for UCSB with a 2.70 ERA over 16 starts, inlcuding three complete games. The southpaw also struck out 96 batters in just over 116 innings of work.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson saw both his 23-game on-base streak and 14-game hitting streak come to a close, but is still at or near the top of several leaderboards in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product is now second in the NYPL in batting average with a .372 mark, though his .450 on-base percentage is tops in the league. Grayson also occupies spots in the NYPL's top five in hits (T-1st, 35), RBI (3rd, 21) and runs scored (T-5th, 18)
-SPIKE MARKS: Former Spikes pitcher Ryan Hafner, who tossed a scoreless, one-hit inning for Batavia two nights ago, was called up to Single-A Greensboro today...Infielder Champ Rowland joined the Spikes yesterday after starting his pro career with the Rookie-level GCL Cardinals...Catcher Riley Drongesen, who signed with the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in 2015 out of Menlo College in California, was called up from Johnson City two days ago after Brian O'Keefe was promoted to Single-A Peoria...O'Keefe homered in his first game there last night...Mike Pritchard is tied for the NYPL lead for runs scored wtih 20 on the season...Pritchard has also struck out just once every 12.44 plate appearances, the fourth-best rate in the league
