
Doubledays Come up Short

AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays fought an uphill battle Monday afternoon and their rally fell short as they lost to the Black Bears 4-3 in the series finale.
The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Mitchell Tolman walked and then stole second. Tolman then came around to score on a single into right off the bat of Kevin Newman.
West Virginia added to its lead an inning later in the fourth. Logan Hill singled to center and stole second base to move into scoring position. Hill then raced over to third on a passed ball with Albert Baur at the plate. Later in the at bat, Baur grounded out to second and Hill scored from third to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless fifth, the Black Bears took a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Ty Moore lined a single into left and then scored when Baur doubled into the left field corner. Baur advanced to third on the throw and then scored on a wild pitch with Maximo Rivera batting.
Down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Doubledays finally got on the board. Rafael Bautista singled to right and Rhett Wiseman moved him over to third on a double to third. David Kerian stepped up next and drove in Bautista with a sacrifice fly to left to put the score at 4-1.
An inning later in the bottom of the ninth, the Doubledays mounted a rally. Jorge Tillero walked and advanced to third on a double to left from Randy Encarnacion. Victor Robles dug in next and brought in Tillero with a sacrifice fly to center that also moved Encarnacion to third. Bautista then brought in Encarnacion when he grounded out to third. Wiseman stepped up next and singled into left and moved to second on a pass ball, but Kerian grounded out to second to end the game shortly after.
Taylor Hearn started for the Doubledays and took the loss as his line was: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 4 K's. Jonathan Brubaker started for the Black Bears and earned the win as his line was: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, and 5 K's.
Auburn hits the road for a six-game road trip starting Tuesday in Vermont and Lowell. The Doubledays face the Lake Monsters Tuesday night at 7:05 PM in game one of a three-game series.
