Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters suffered a 12-4 loss in the series finale against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Monday night. The Cutters also dropped their first three game series at home this season fall to 16-4 at Susquehanna Bank Park and 17-4 against Pinckney Division foes.
The Cutters fell behind early against Mahoning Valley as the long ball was working for the Scrappers. Jodd Carter hit his first home run of the season to give the Scrappers a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Cutters would answer with a run in the home half of the inning off a sacrifice fly from Gregori Rivero scoring Brendon Hayden from third to make it a 2-1 game. Mark Mathias continued his offensive tear for the Scrappers with a solo home run in the top of the third inning make it a 3-1 game.
Williamsport cut the Mahoning Valley lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning as Venn Biter delivered his team leading 14th RBI of the season with a single. The Cutters would rally to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mark Laird drove in Zach Coppola with an RBI double after Coppola reached on an error to start the inning. Laird would then come around to score from third base on a wild pitch from Scrappers starter Shao-Ching Chiang.
The Cutters went to their bullpen early as Denton Keys exited the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Skylar Hunter was called upon to get out of the jam and would do so with a pop up to Willi Castro for the third out. With the game tied the Cutters had arguably their best chance to take a lead in the sixth inning with the bases loaded. Mahoning Valley got out of the jam as Laird sent a line drive right into the glove of the third baseman. The Scrappers would score eight runs over the final three innings to jump out to a 12-4 lead.
