NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (13-16) snapped their brief two game losing streak as they defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades (16-13) by a score of 4-2 on Monday night.
With the loss Hudson Valley snaps their four game winning streak and Connecticut wins for just the fourth time in the last twelve games.
It didn't take long for Connecticut to jump out in front. Facing Cameron Varga (1-2) the second round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays out of Cincinnati Hills Christian (OH) the Tigers put a four spot on the board in the first. Centerfielder Victor Padron (1-4) led off with a single and shortstop AJ Simcox walked putting two runners on. After an out third basemen Josh Lester singled home Padron making it 1-0. On the play Simcox moved to third and Lester advanced to second.
After an RBI groundout first basemen Corey Baptist (1-2, 2B, RBI) doubled home the third run of the game. Baptist scored one batter later on a single to right by leftfielder Jose Zambrano making it 4-0.
Varga ended up pitching well throughout the rest of his outing. In fact he retired the final fifteen batters he faced. The final line for Varga was six innings, four hits and four runs all earned while striking out two and walking just one.
Spenser Watkins (3-2) got the ball for Connecticut to start and after struggling his last start bounced back with a strong outing. Watkins worked six shut outs innings allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking one. Jake Shull (SV 2) pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
