Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats concluded a six-game homestand by splitting a doubleheader against the Aberdeen IronBirds, winning the first game 7-2, and dropping the second contest 3-1, in front of 5,011 fans on Camp / Senior Day, at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Monday.

After Saturday night's game was postponed due to weather, the 'Cats and IronBirds began the doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. Both games were seven-inning contests.

Tri-City took game one thanks to an explosive offensive performance, starting in the bottom of the first inning, when Dexture McCall drove home Edwin Medina with a ground ball to first base, and Anthony Hermelyn drove home Bryan Muniz with an RBI single to left field.

Left-hander Alex Winkelman, who was making his first start, and second appearance as a Tri-City ValleyCat, kept the IronBirds' bats in check, allowing only one run on four hits, while striking out six batters in five innings. And his pitching was more than enough to support the 'Cats offense, who broke out even more in the bottom of the fourth.

Hermelyn got the scoring started in that frame, coming home on an RBI ground out off the bat of Johnny Sewald. Two batters later, Muniz, drove home Aaron Mizell and Antonio Nunez with two-run single to center field, then McCall followed that up with a two-run double, putting the 'Cats ahead 7-1.

The IronBirds tacked on one run in the top of the sixth when Aberdeen left fielder D.J. Stewarts hit a solo home run to right field, but that was all they could muster, as the ValleyCats took the victory by the score of 7-2.

In the second game, Stewart put the IronBirds on the board in the first inning, hitting another solo home run to right field, giving Aberdeen a 1-0 lead.

That's where the score stood heading into the bottom of the fifth, when Tri-City catcher Richard Gonzalez slammed a 1-0 pitch from Aberdeen right-hander Francisco Jimenez into the ValleyCats' bullpen for his first home run of the season, and tying the game at 1-1 in the process.

That score stood pat until the top of the eighth, when Aberdeen took a 3-1 lead with a two-run single by first baseman Steve Laurino, and held the 'Cats scoreless in the bottom half of the frame, taking the victory and preventing Tri-City from completing a doubleheader sweep.

The 'Cats will now head on a six-game road trip, playing three games against the Lowell Spinners, before playing three against the Batavia Muckdogs. Getting the start for Tri-City tomorrow in the first game of the series in Lowell will be RHP Kevin McCanna (0-1, 3.55), with RHP Dioscar Romero (2-2, 2.95) on the mound for the Spinners.
