-SPIKES FINISH HOME SERIES AGAINST SCRAPPERS: The State College Spikes continue their 10th Season tonight as they complete a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The series is the second of the year between the Spikes and Scrappers, with a four-game, three-day set on the slate to end August and begin September. State College took a pair of games from Mahoning Valley at Eastwood Field on June 25-26. The Spikes are now just a game back of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead in a tie for third, with the Scrappers also part of a crowded playoff hunt.
-LAST GAME: Dailyn Martinez contributed another quality start on the mound for the Spikes, and a four-run fourth inning helped keep the Spikes within a half-game of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead as they defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-3, on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Martinez tossed six innings and allowed three runs for his third straight quality outing with State College. The right-hander yielded nine hits and three walks, but struck out three for the win. State College helped bolster their starter's efforts with the big fourth inning, loading the bases twice in the frame. Ronnierd Garcia broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single, with Jose Godoy producing a sacrifice fly one batter later. Mike Pritchard then brought in two runs with a double to complete the Spikes' scoring. Pedro Echemendia recorded three groundouts in a perfect ninth for the save.
-ALL-STAR PEREZ ON THE MOUND FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Juan Perez, who was named to pitch in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game next Tuesday in Aberdeen, gets the ball for State College this evening. Perez has taken off since tying a Spikes record with 10 strikeouts in a single start on July 18 against Batavia. The San Felipe, Venezuela native has allowed just three runs over his last 21 innings for a 1.29 ERA over his last four starts. Perez took the loss in his last start, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings at Batavia on August 5.
-SCRAPPERS SEND CHIANG TO HILL: Mahoning Valley will put right-hander Shao-Ching Chiang on the mound tonight for his eight start and ninth appearance of the year. The Hualien, Taiwan native was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA after his first three starts, but has been up and down in July and August. Chiang took the loss against Batavia on Thursday after yielding four runs, two wearned, on six hits and a walk over six innings of work. The righty has gone at least five innings in all but one start, but has walked at least one batter in each of his last five outings.
-FIVE SPIKES HEADED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Casey Grayson, Leobaldo Pina, Mike Pritchard, Landon Beck and Juan Perez were all selected to the South roster for the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, as announced by the league on Saturday. The quintet ties a Spikes record for most players headed to the annual showcase of future stars, last set in 2013. The All-Star Game is set to take place on Tuesday, August 18 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen IronBirds.
-DICKERSON MAKES MLB DEBUT: 2011 Spike Alex Dickerson became the 29th player to go from State College to the major leagues on Thursday when he pinch-hit in the eighth inning for the San Diego Padres against the Milwaukee Brewers. Dickerson had been called up by the Padres earlier in the day.
