Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

For just the second time this season, the Scrappers (22-27) were swept in three games. This time, it was the Spikes (26-24) who completed the three-game sweep of the Scrappers.

State College is now 5-0 against Mahoning Valley this season, as the Scrappers have now lost five of their last six.

The Scrappers tried to get run support early for Shao-Ching Chiang, but it didn't last long. Ka'ai Tom hit his second home run of the season, but the Spikes grabbed two in the bottom of the first to take a lead. Thomas Spitz led off the first with a single to center. Spitz later scored on an RBI triple to right center for Leobaldo Pina. Orlando Olivera had three hits and four RBI's in the game, and drove in Pina with a single in the bottom of the first.

State College scored three in the bottom of the third. Leobaldo Pina singled, and later scored on an Olivera double to right. Casey Grayson also scored in the inning when Jesse Jenner grounded out to short.

Olivera reached with the hit, and scored when Craig Aikin singled to center.

Chiang was tagged for eight hits, and five earned runs, which was a season-high. It was his shortest outing of the season, as he failed to make it out of the third inning.

Brock Hartson brought his ERA below one with a dominant performance in three and one-third innings. Hartson didn't allow a hit, but walked two.

The Scrappers bounced back to tie the game in the fifth. Silento Sayles ripped a single to right. Willi Castro went hitless to end his hit streak at eight games. Castro walked. Mark Mathias walked to load the bases. Juan De La Cruz singled on a pop fly on the infield. Juan Perez, Grayson, Jenner, and Pina all came in, but nobody could make a catch. That scored Sayles.

Connor Marabell later walked to score Castro. Daniel Salters extended his hit streak to six games when he crushed a single to center to plate Mathias and De La Cruz.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Spikes took the lead for good. Spitz singled and later scored along with Pina (walk) on a two-run single for Olivera.

The Scrappers head home for a brief three-game set with Hudson Valley. Casey Shane gets the ball on Wednesday night for the Scrappers at 7:05.
