Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BATAVIA, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters were shutout in both games of a doubleheader for the first-time in the team's 22-year history as the Batavia Muckdogs swept the New York-Penn League twinbill 6-0 and 1-0 on Tuesday night at Dwyer Stadium.

Vermont had won a season-best five straight games and scored a season-high 11 runs in an 11-5 win at Batavia on Sunday, but the Lake Monsters were held to just one hit in the opener (a two-out infield singe in the first inning) and were 5-for-46 at the plate in the doubleheader to drop the team batting average to a season-low .240 overall. The shutouts were also the first in back-to-back games for the Lake Monsters since losing consecutive 3-0 decisions at Centennial Field to Lowell on July 7-8, 2005.

Batavia jumped on Vermont starter Kevin Duchene for three runs in the first inning of game one as each of the Muckdogs first three batters scored. LJ Brewster had an RBI single to score Anfernee Seymour, who had led off with a walk and stole his league-leading 23rd base, and Stone Garrett followed with an RBI double. Garrett then scored on a Brad Haynal RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead. Duchene settled down to retire nine of the final 11 batters he faced.

The Muckdogs added an unearned run in the fourth off Kevin Ferreras, while Roy Morales had an RBI double and Angel Reyes a sacrifice fly for two runs in the fifth inning off Tyler Painton.

Muckdogs starter Brett Lilek (1-2) allowed just the one first-inning single with one walk and seven strikeouts over five innings to earn his first win, while Jordan Hillyer tossed two hitless innings of relief in the opener. Game two starter Scott Squier (4-0) scattered four hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five innings of the nightcap, while Steve Farnsworth had two strikeouts in two hitless innings to earn his 10th save of the season.

The Muckdogs scored the only run of game two in the first as Alexander Fernandez reached on an error to leadoff the inning, advanced to third on a Brewster single and then scored an unearned run when Haynal grounded into a bases loaded double play. Vemront starter Dustin Driver (1-3) allowed just the one unearned run on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over five innings, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced.

Vermont (22-28) returns home to Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers, including Princess Night at the ballpark for the series opener on Wednesday at 7:05 pm.
