Lowell Spinners News Release

TROY, NY - For the second straight day and Andrew Benintendi solo home run gave the Lowell Spinners an early lead and for a second straight day the Spinners found that lead gone as quick as they gained it. Benintendi however was not done and for the second straight day the Spinners completed a come-from-behind win, topping the Tri-City ValleyCats, 8-4, bookended by Benintendi home runs, his sixth and seventh home runs of the season.

It was Benintendi's first home run of the game and second in as many days that gave the Spinners a 1-0 first inning lead. The lead was short-lived however, as the ValleyCats once again took advantage of a first inning Spinners' error, this time by catcher Alixon Suarez, and took a 2-1 lead.

Tri-City (28-23) expanded their lead in a wild second inning. After two quick outs, Spinners' starter Dioscar Romero hit ValleyCats shortstop Antonio Nunez in the back. Nunez took offense and began gesticulating at the mound before shoving Suarez behind the plate. Both benches cleared and both Nunez and Romero were ejected. Logan Boyd came in and hit the first batter he faced before Aaron Mizell tripled in both runners before being thrown out at the plate to end the inning with Tri-City ahead, 4-1.

Lowell (27-24) took the lead in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. A single by Jeremy Rivera plated a run and after the ValleyCats went to bullpen, a run scoring single from Suarez brought the Spinners within a run. After a walk to Luis Alexander Basabe loaded the bases, Chad De La Guerra cleared them with a double to the gap, putting Lowell ahead, 6-4.

The Spinners would add a run in the sixth, as Basabe re-took sole possession of the team lead in home runs with his seventh of the season, a solo blast, to extend the lead to 7-4. Benintendi quickly re-took a share of the lead himself in the ninth with his second solo home run of the game, an opposite field shot to give the Spinners another insurance run.

Tri-City would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth in the form of Bobby Wernes, but Bobby Poyner induced a groundball force out to end the game and give the Spinners an 8-4 win.

Three Spinners had multi-hit games as part of the team's 12 hit attack, led by Benintendi's three-hit game. De La Guerra added three RBI while both Rivera and Suarez added RBI from the bottom of the line-up.

Romero was charged with three runs, one earned, on two hits over 1.2 innings. He struck out one before his ejection. Boyd (3-0, 3.22) came in and went 4.2 innings, allowing an inherited runner to score and one run of his own, but otherwise keeping the ValleyCats scoreless. He struck out two. Poyner picked up his sixth save with 2.2 scoreless, striking out one.

With the win the Spinners pulled back within a game of the ValleyCats in the Stedler Division standings and, for the moment, sole possession of the Wild Card. The Spinners now head to Batavia for a three-game set with the Muckdogs. Lefthander Javier Rodriguez will get the ball Thursday night for a 7:05 first pitch.
