Stars Stunned by Admirals in Final Meeting
March 5, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Texas Stars News Release
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin - The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars, went into Milwaukee holding a 5-0-2-0 record against the first seven games of the series but failed to complete the eighth meeting with a win. The Admirals completely reversed the game during a 10-minute span of the second period and overtook the Stars 6-2 in the contest.
Texas powered through the first period with a 1-0 lead and would tack on a second goal at the start of the second period. Michael Mersch scored a brilliant goal in the first 10 minutes of the game on the power play. The winger pulled the puck to the side of the net and after Troy Grosenick made a save at the side of the post, Mersch cross checked the puck with his stick shaft to open the scoring. Texas has scored a power play goal in each of the last six games and are 9-for-26 in that stretch. They finished the night 1-for-6 on the man advantage while Milwaukee's night wrapped up with a 1-for-4 performance.
After the first intermission, Texas extended their lead and scored 35 seconds into the second period. Denis Gurianov was led up the ice by Justin Dowling to start a 2-on-1. Gurianov stepped into the right wing circle and sent home his 15th goal of the season.
A few minutes later, the Admirals finally caught wind. After obtaining a power play five and a half minutes into the period, they began a surge of five goals. Anthony Richard opened the scoring with his 19th goal of the season, scoring on the power play. Garret Ross capitalized right after the following power play chance, deflecting in his fourth goal of the year. Vince Pedrie would add the eventual game winning goal at 10:51 with his second of the season, following by Laurent Dauphin's shorthanded goal at 15:50. Jarred Tinordi capped off the run with a tally at 16:58 of the second period with his seventh of the season.
In the third period, the Stars pressed for a goal, sending a game-high 10 shots on net in the period. Despite a pair of third period power plays, Texas failed to score in the final frame. Forward Joe Pendenza notched one final goal for the Admirals on a shorthanded rush that slipped past Landon Bow. The Stars netminder, who allowed just nine goals against Milwaukee in the first six games of the season, made 23 saves in the contest. Grosenick finished the contest with 23 stops as well.
