Stars Erase Storm, 2-0, on Color out Cancer Night
October 17, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - Peyton Jones stopped 27 shots, the Tri-City Storm were 0-for-6 on the man advantage and the Lincoln Stars bested the Storm, 2-0, on Color Out Cancer Night Friday at the Viaero Center.
More than 500 fans painted the ice with rainbow colors Thursday night to help remember those that have fought cancer.
Lincoln's penalty-kill denials helped drop the Storm to its third straight defeat. Tri-City is home to Omaha Lancers at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in Kearney.
Goalie Matt Greenfield went shot-for-shot with the Lincoln netminder Jones. The duo combined to stop 46 of 47 shots.
Dom Mersch scored the game-deciding goal at the 12:59 mark of the second. Carson Gisewicz pushed the puck to the right point for Ryan Jones. The burly defenseman sent a wrister through traffic that knocked off Mersch's stick from the right post and into the net.
Greenfield has given up three goals at even strength this season in four starts.
The five-on-five goal bolstered the Stars the remainder of the way. Tri-City had twelve shots on Jones in the final frame, but the second-year netminder held court for his league-best second shutout of the campaign.
Sam Kauppila scored an empty-net goal with 1.7 seconds left, unassisted, to ice the game and give the Stars a 2-0 lead.
During the third, Tri-City went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Storm's home power-play unit has started 0-for-16 after failing to score on six opportunities tonight. Tri-City's home penalty kill is a perfect 14-for-14 to begin the campaign.
Tri-City denied the Stars on four power-play chances. The Storm allow two goals per game, second best in the league.
Saturday, October 17 is "Minions Night" with a 7 p.m. game division rival Omaha. The ice remains painted from Color Out Cancer Night. The Storm pregame show begins at 6:45 p.m.
