Des Moines, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars won their fifth in a row and improved to 6-1-0 with a 3-1 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Saturday night in Des Moines.
The Stars responded from a sluggish first period with two goals in the second to take the lead.
Stars forward Patrick Polino opened the scoring on the power play at 16:39 of the period, earning his third goal of the season.
Three minutes later Stars forward Biagio Lerario pounced on a rebound from Ethen Frank's shot to give the Stars a 2-0 lead at the second intermission.
Special teams continued to propel the Stars in the third period when Carson Gicewicz carried a puck into the right circle and fired a slap shot past Buccaneer goalie Jan Ruzicka for the shorthanded tally.
The goal marked Gicewicz's first in the USHL.
Des Moines forward Laine McKay spoiled the shutout late in the third, but Stars goalie Patrik Virtanen would preserve the victory and finish the game with 27 saves.
The Stars return to action next weekend vs. Team USA in Plymouth, Mich.
