Capitols Rally in Third, Complete Sweep in Shootout Fashion

Madison Capitols News Release

Plymouth, MI - The Madison Capitols (4-2-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third to force overtime and then a shootout en route to a 3-2 win over the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program (3-2-1) on Saturday night from USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

After being outshot in their first five games, Madison wanted to turn the tides with a more quantified offensive output, and they did just that by registering 15 first period shots, including a bevy of chances on parts of three power plays. Team USA goaltender Adam Scheel was the story of the opening frame, stopping each Capitols' offering and getting help from an improved defense in front of him.

At the other end, Ryan Edquist got his second Saturday start in two weeks and had a quieter first period, but did turn aside six Team USA shots, including two power play situations.

The Capitols kept their streak of scoring first alive when Tommy Muck wristed one past Scheel at 8:12 of the second period. Garrett Klee moved in on goal, only to get denied on a backhand by Scheel, but Muck located the loose puck from the high slotted and sent it through a sea of traffic to get Madison on top, 1-0.

However, unlike an evening ago when Madison got the first seven goals unanswered, Team USA came up with a reply just over four minutes later. Graham Slaggert picked up the puck in the right circle and, with his back to the net, sent a spinning pass that banked into the goal behind Edquist to make it 1-1 at 12:15.

Feeling more confident about their game after tying the game, the Americans took it a step further and vaulted to the lead as Evan Barratt slammed home a rebound from the left side at 17:52 to put Madison behind 2-1 heading to the third stanza.

The Capitols were stymied by Scheel a total of 42 times by night's end, but Guillaume Leclerc came up with one of Madison's biggest goals of the young season, squeaking a wrister through Scheel's armpit at 2:24 of the final frame to tie the score, 2-2.

Both teams threatened to break the tie in the third, including a Quinn Hughes chance for Team USA that clanged iron late in regulation, but the game headed to overtime at 2-2 unresolved.

In the extra session, the two teams played the first 3-on-3 action in their histories and Madison had a glorious chance as Lohin fed Daniel Willett for a one time blast from the slot, but Scheel answered with a sprawling glove save.

After neither team located the winner in the overtime, the game progressed to a shootout, where Haralds Egle played the role of hero, faking a slap shot and beating Scheel through the wickets for the lone shootout tally. Josh Norris had his chance tip off Edquist and then the post, but Team USA got no closer.

Edquist picked up his second win in as many starts and Madison improved its winning streak to four games in the win.

Madison returns to the Alliant Energy Center on Friday, Oct. 23 for a three-game weekend set against the Chicago Steel & Bloomington Thunder. Friday, Oct. 23 against Chicago is the first WJJO $1 Beer Night featuring a new beer garden location. The Capitols host Bloomington on Saturday, Oct. 24 for Craft Beer Night, and on Sunday, Chicago returns for Pucks N' Paws presented by Animart, where dogs will be permitted entrance into the Alliant Energy Center.
