Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-Lawton Courtnall scored twice and Stefanos Lekkas had another strong performance in goal with 26 saves as the Sioux Falls Stampede topped the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-2 before 5,787 fans at the PREMIER Center Saturday night. The win was the Herd's third straight and completed a weekend home sweep of the Black Hawks. Sioux Falls improved to 4-3-0 on the season with the win and 4-1-0 on home ice this season.
The Stampede knew heading into the second game of the weekend they would need to come out with more energy and better play and they did just did that. The Herd controlled much of the play in the first period, but neither team could find the back of the net until the 12:55 mark when Eric MacAdams tallied his second goal of the season. Matt Riggleman sent a pass up the right wing wall to MacAdams who undressed the Waterloo defense and cut in front of the goal before wristing a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net past the glove of Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris. That would prove to be the only goal of the period and the Herd took their 1-0 lead into the locker room, outshooting the Hawks 13-11 in the period.
Things heated up even more in the second period as both teams dominated at certain points in the period. With the Stampede on the penalty kill, Lawton Courtnall chipped the puck off the left wing boards and broke across on a 2-on-1 with Josh Passolt. Courtanll sent a pass to Passolt inside the right circle who quickly sent a pass back in the slot to Courtnall who then one-timed the puck into the back of the net to give the Herd a 2-0 lead. Waterloo would not back down and rallied for a pair of goals of their own in the period. Ronnie Hein snuck past the Stampede defense and riffled a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net past Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas to make it a 2-1 game at 8:19. The Black Hawks took control from there and just over three minutes later scored again, this time it was Alex Robert who took a pass in the right circle from David Cotton and blasted a shot past Lekkas to tie the game, 2-2.
Sioux Falls was able to grab some momentum back and regained the lead when Courtnall struck again this time at 14:21 when he knocked down the puck and broke in on a breakaway, putting the puck through the pads of Morris and giving the Stampede a 3-2 lead. The Herd outshot the Hawks 8-7 in the period and took their one goal lead into the final period.
The third period provided more entertainment for the fans as both teams continued to exchanged great scoring opportunities, but both goaltenders were up to the challenge and shut down their opponent. The Hawks pulled their goaltender in the final minute, but the Herd made sure they didn't let the game slip away and Parker Tuomie scored on an empty netter with just three seconds left to seal the victory.
Waterloo outshot the Herd 10-4 in the period and 28-25 in the game. Both teams struggled to score on the power play as Waterloo went 0-for-7 and the Herd were 0-for-5.
The Stampede return to action next Friday night as they travel to Bloomington to face the Thunder before heading to Cedar Rapids on Saturday. Game times are 7:05 PM each night and you can catch the games live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.COM.
