Lincoln Stars News Release
The Lincoln Stars overcame two different deficits but couldn't recover from the third as they fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-3, on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Waterloo (16-11-0-0) scored a shorthanded goal 2:21 into the third to take the lead for good. The Black Hawks were in the midst of their second consecutive four-minute penalty kill after to different high-sticking penalties that drew blood late in the second period. Grady Derring netted the game-winner while Miles Hilman scored twice for the visitors.
Special teams loomed large Friday night besides just the game-winner. Hilman's second goal 7:19 into the second came on the power play as did Gavin Lindberg's tally six minutes into the game.
Lincoln (11-16-0-2) showed its resiliency with two quick-strike answers. The first came 1:24 after Lindberg opened the scoring when Keaton Peters one-timed a feed from Juan Copeland in the slot for his 11th of the season. The other answer was when German Yavash redirected an Adam Kleber shot at 7:42 mark of the second, 23 seconds after Hilman's second of the night. Kleber led it fly from the left point and Yavash's deflection knuckled over the lunging attempts of goaltender Jack Spicer.
Blake Montgomery scored 1:24 after Peters tied the game when a quick play off the far wall quickly resulted in Lincoln's lone lead of the night. Ryan Spinale dug the puck off the far wall to Jared Mangan, who tee'd up Montgomery for a one-time blast near-post side.
The Stars look to bounce back on Saturday night when they face the Black Hawks again at 6:05. The first 600 fans receive a free koozie thanks to Culver's and Empyrean Brewing Company. Tickets can be purchased at lincolnstars.com.
