Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - A penalty filled matchup with multiple ejections isn't what usually comes in the same game as a 6-goal blowout, but the front end of a weekend series between the Muskegon Lumberjacks (17-11-1-1, 36 pts.) and Dubuque Fighting Saints (20-7-1-3, 44 pts.) had both 58 total penalty minutes and an 8-2 final score.
The Fighting Saints jumped out to an early lead with a goal within the first minute of the game. Just 47 seconds from the opening draw Erik Pahlsson beat Shikhabutdin Gadzhiev (Makhachkala, RUS) for his 15th goal of the season. Michael Barron followed up just two minutes later to make it 2-0 Dubuque. The second half of the period looked better for Muskegon, though they weren't able to bring the score closer as they entered the first intermission trailing by a pair.
Muskegon opened the scoring in the second period at the 3:12 mark thanks to a bit of offensive zone time. Filip Nordberg (Stockholm, SWE) kept the puck in the offensive zone at the near side of the blue line. Walking towards the slot Nordberg sent a shot on net that was turned aside, but David Klee (Castle Rock, CO) was ready and waiting at the side of the net to bang it home for his 9th goal of the season and bring the games back to within one.
Dubuque then scored two straight goals to make it a 3-goal lead. James Reeder scored first just a couple minutes after the Jacks goal to make it 3-1. Then on the power play it took just a few seconds for the Saints to strike. Pahlsson received a pass back door and one-timed it to the back pf the net for his second goal of the game and a 4-1 Dubuque lead.
Before the end of the period Muskegon brought the deficit to just a pair with a power play goal of their own. Again Nordberg kept the puck in the offensive zone though this time sent a pass to the near side wall for Cody Croal (North Branch, MN). Croal carried the puck towards the net and tucked a shot between the goalie and the post to close the Dubuque lead with 4 minutes to go until the intermission.
Not much went better for the Lumberjacks in the third period as the Fighting Saints scored 4 unanswered goals in the final frame to pick up the 8-2 win.
Gadzhiev (0-1) stayed in the net for the entirety of the game earning the loss. He made 21 saves on 29 shots against. James Norton (3-0-0-1) earned the win making 25 saves on 27 shots.
The teams close the weekend series tomorrow night at ImOn Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm CST (8:05 pm CST). Catch the action on the official live stream partner of the USHL FloHockey, and for free on the Lumberjacks Hockey Network on Mixlr.
