Stampede Unable to Steal Overtime Win

GENEVA, ILL.- The Sioux Falls Stampede was unable to finish tonight's overtime game against the Chicago Steel, falling 4-3. Tyler Borgula, Jaksen Panzer and Beckett Hendrickson tabbed goals while Caleb Heil earned 22 saves in net, but it wasn't enough to hold the Steel off in overtime. The Herd is now 15-13-2-1 and holds fourth place in the USHL Western Conference.

The Stampede and Steel played a back-and-forth game through the entire 60 minutes. Tyler Borgula scored first, assisted by John McNelis, just over the five-minute mark into the first period. His goal was answered by Chicago around four minutes later. Rounding out the first period, Jaksen Panzer found a shot on net as the net was knocked off its pegs, causing some confusion as to whether or not it was a good goal. After reviewing the play, the officials called a good goal, putting the Herd up 2-1 to end the first period.

Chicago struck first in the second period, tying the game again, with just over a minute expired from the clock. Halfway through the period, Stampede forward Beckett Hendrickson would regain the team's lead, with help from Chris Pelosi. The Stampede went one-for-six in shots on goal in the second period, compared to the Steel's 11 shots on goal with one tally added to the scoreboard.

With a Stampede lead to start the third period, the Herd had its sights set on gaining two points in the USHL standings until Chicago's Mick Thompson tied the game back up. The score would remain 3-3 for the rest of the period, sending the Herd and Steel to sudden-death, three-on-three overtime. The Stampede was unable to reclaim its lead and, instead, gave up a goal just 39 seconds into the overtime period.

The penalty box saw very little motion over the 60:39-minute game. Just two powerplays were awarded, the first to the Stampede in the first period when Chicago's Chris Able was given two minutes for boarding. The second powerplay landed Stampede newcomer Noah Eyre in the box for slashing in the second period. Neither powerplay was capitalized upon.

The Herd and Steel will close out the weekend tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. The team will then come back to Sioux Falls for a three-game weekend beginning Jan. 11. Hosting the Team USA NTDP and Omaha Lancers, the Herd has a full slate of fun planned for the weekend, including Hockey Moms Night and Hockey Day South Dakota.
