Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas - Jason Dickinson scored a goal to extend his point streak to five games, but the Ontario Reign pulled away in the third to top the Texas Stars in a 5-2 final on Saturday night in front of 5,739 in attendance at Cedar Park Center to close out the season series between the two teams.
The Stars (32-20-4-3) stayed within a goal of the Reign (32-14-3-1) for the majority of the game, but Jordan Samuels-Thomas' goal midway through the third period opened up a 4-2 lead and Ontario added an empty-net tally late to pull away in the end.
The Stars continue their homestand on Wednesday when they host the Iowa Wild at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Ontario opened up the scoring 8:27 into the first when Kris Newbury's wrist shot deflected off Jonny Broadzinski and past Maxime Lagace for a 1-0 score. The Reign made it a 2-0 game on their third power play of the period when Sean Backman's point shot deflected off a Texas skate at 10:25. Curtis McKenzie put Texas on the board with his 14th of the season after taking Brett Ritchie's centering pass and wrapping it around the leg pad of Ontario's Peter Budaj at 14:37.
The two teams traded goals in period two as Backman struck again on the power play for the Reign at 12:19, but Dickinson responded for the Stars with eight seconds remaining in the period. Ritchie set up the rookie forward for a rebound goal at the right side of the net to cap off an odd-man rush and make it a 3-2 score entering third before Ontario sealed the win.
Justin Auger scored the empty-net goal for the Reign, and Budaj earned the win in a 24-save performance. Lagace suffered just his third loss in his last 15 games with 22 saves.
Both teams earned five power play chances in the game. Texas was held scoreless while Ontario struck twice.
The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center. Full season, 24-game and 12-game ticket packages for the 2015-16 campaign are on sale now. For more information, call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit TexasStars.com.
