Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - Craig Cunningham powered the Springfield Falcons past the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with a hat trick in a 5-2 win on Saturday night.

The Penguins tallied the first goal of the game with a deflection from Kael Mouillierat on the power play at 15:26. His thirteenth of the year was assisted by a Carter Rowney shot and Tim Erixon. The Falcons power play responded 1:28 later with a Cunningham goal to the tie the game at one. His 15th of the year was scored on a wrist shot in the slot and was assisted by Dustin Jeffrey and Henrik Samuelsson. Just 40 seconds later, the Falcons converted on another power play. Cunningham deflected a Philip Samuelsson slap shot for his second of the night. The other assist was collected by Alex Grant with the Falcons leading 2-1 after the first period.

A great duration of the second period was played scoreless. Falcons goaltender Marek Langhamer kept the Penguins offense at bay with nine stops in the frame and 19 saves during the first two periods. With 23 seconds remaining, Cunningham registered the first hat trick by a Falcon since April 4, 2014. The score was once again on the power play and was his 17th of the year with assists from Jeffrey and Grant.

Just 20 seconds into the third period, Jean-Sebastien Dea closed the Falcons lead to a 3-2 score. His 13th of the year was assisted by Clark Seymour and Oskar Sundqvist. At 4:50, Phil Lane returned the Falcons lead to two goals. His fifth of the year was scored in the slot on a wrist shot. Michael Bunting stole the puck from Sundqvist and found Lane in front of the net. With under two minutes to play, the Penguins pulled netminder Tristan Jarry for the extra attacker. Lane converted on the empty net for his second of the night with assists awarded to Dakota Mermis and Eric Selleck. That goal sealed the game at a 5-2 Falcons win, the team's first back-to-back victory since November 22 and November 27. Langhammer won his seventh game of the year with 33 saves. Jarry made 27 saves in the loss.

The Falcons conclude their three-game weekend tomorrow afternoon when they visit the Portland Pirates at 3:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN or streamed online on AHL Live.
