San Antonio Rampage News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Antonio Rampage (23-25-8-0) fell in their fifth contest against the San Diego Gulls (26-20-1-2), losing 5-1 in front of 9,585 in Valley View Casino Center. The Rampage were only outshot 38-37, but Joey Hishon's acrobatic goal in the second period wasn't enough to spark a comeback. San Diego's barrage of goals began early in the first stanza when a shot from Chris Mueller rebounded off San Antonio's Reto Berra and landed at the feet of Ondrej Kase, who casually slid it past Berra for the tally. The early San Diego goal didn't bode well for the Rampage as the Gulls were 20-0-0-1 when scoring first entering the game. San Diego extended their lead with 21 seconds remaining in the period on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. The Gulls' power play unit fluidly moved the puck around until they found an open backdoor shot on Berra, and San Antonio trailed 2-0 after the first 20 minutes.

The Rampage cut into the lead in the fourth minute of the second period when Hishon made an impeccable turn-around snapshot from the faceoff circle. With momentum shifting towards San Antonio, San Diego stopped the rally with a goal of their own nearly three minutes later. San Diego moved the puck into the Rampage zone and hit a trailing Shea Theodore for an uncontested shot, giving Theodore his sixth of the season and extending the Gulls' lead to two. San Diego bagged a fourth goal at the 14:31 mark from Kyle MacKinnon, and a fifth goal in the third period from Nic Kerdiles.

Berra finished the game with 33 saves on 38 shots in his third consecutive start. San Diego found success on the power play, netting two power play goals on three opportunities. The Rampage's seventh-ranked power play unit went scoreless on their three chances with the man advantage.
