Clinton LumberKings News Release

Peoria, IL - Right-hander Taylor Stanton limited Peoria to two runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings and the Clinton offense never trailed after a three-run first as the LumberKings evened the series with a 7-2 win over the Chiefs at O'Brien Field. The victory keeps the Kings ahead of Kane County for the top playoff spot in the West by 1.5 games.

Stanton (W, 12-6) became the first Midwest League hurler to win 12 games this season, limiting the damage in the third and fourth innings and making a 3-2 lead stand up.

He emerged from a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the third inning with just one run as he induced Logan Watkins into a 4-6-3 double-play and got Matt Cerda to line out to center. In the fourth, he pitched out of a two-on, one-out situation with only a run allowed as he struck out D.J. Fitzgerald and Jose Guevara. In Stanton's final frame, he struck out Cerda and catcher Henry Contreras caught Hak-Ju Lee in a rundown to emerge from a two-on, one-out jam.

The Kings never trailed as a result of a three-run first inning against Peoria right-hander Ryan Searle. James Jones and Nick Franklin opened the game with singles to right and Mickey Wiswall lifted a double to right-center to score Jones. Searle struck out two and was almost out of the inning, but a slow roller to first base off the bat of Contreras proved to be trouble. First-baseman Justin Bour handled and flipped to Searle who dropped the baseball while stepping on the bag. Both Franklin and Wiswall raced home for the 3-0 lead.

Searle (L, 6-8) yielded just those three runs, one earned on six hits over 5.0 innings yet his club trailed by one after his exit. Right-hander Luis Liria came on in the sixth and struggled with control, walking Contreras and firing a pitch to the backstop before giving up a single to Mario Martinez. Another wild pitch would score Contreras for the 4-2 Clinton advantage.

Rain moved in during the inning and forced the tarp onto the field for a 35-minute delay. Afterwards, the Kings would score on Liria again as Jones beat out a fielder's choice to plate Martinez.

RBI doubles by Tim Morris and Cerione extended the lead to 7-2, plenty for the bullpen to work with. Left-hander Jason Markovitz (H, 3) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out one and right-hander Forrest Snow (S, 5) struck out two over the final two innings for the save.

Every LumberKing in the lineup had at least one hit with Franklin (2-for-5) and Martinez (2-for-5) leading the way. Cerione, Jones, Morris and Wiswall all drove in a run each.

Lee (2-for-3) and Jae-Hoon Ha (2-for-4) each had multi-hit games in the losing cause for Peoria.

The LumberKings (36-27, 73-59) close out the five-game series with the Chiefs (30-31, 68-62) tomorrow night at 6:30 PM. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (10-4, 2.70) makes his 22nd start of the year. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
