LANSING, Mich. - Josh Garton's two-run single (and subsequent Jake Marisnick run-scoring throwing error) capped a stunning seven-run ninth inning rally, as the Dayton Dragons (20-42; 50-81) dealt the Lansing Lugnuts (29-34; 65-67) a heartbreaking 9-7 loss on Monday night on Jackson Field.

With the loss, the Lugnuts fell five games behind the West Michigan Whitecaps for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot with only seven games remaining in the season.

The Lugs took a 7-1 lead into the late-going on the strength of a four-run second inning and a three-run third, only to suffer their most disheartening defeat of the year.

Frank Pfister's run-scoring single in the seventh chipped the lead to 7-2 against starter Matt Fields, though the score seemed an innocent one.

Scott Gracey began the ninth by allowing a Tommy Nurre RBI single before loading the bases with one out. Casey Beck (1-3) relieved Gracey only to serve up an RBI single to Justin Reed, a bases-loaded HBP to Didi Gregorius, and a bases-loaded walk to Mark Fleury, making the score 7-6.

Garton followed with a line drive up the middle, plating Reed and Gregorius. Marisnick's throw toward third bounced off the sliding Fleury, allowing the final run of the game and completing Lansing's misery.

Tzu-Kai Chiu (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win, while Blaine Howell worked around a one-out Kevin Ahrens single in the ninth for his fourth save.

The finale of the four-game series will take place on a Dollar Dog Tuesday at Cooley Law School Stadium, with Lugnuts right-hander Casey Lawrence (0-1, 7.71) opposing Dragons right-hander Ricky Bowen (4-8, 5.88).

Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
