Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs dropped a crucial game to the Clinton LumberKings on Monday, losing 7-2 after allowing three runs in the first inning. The loss drops the Chiefs to 30-31 on the second half of the season and 68-62 overall and drops them farther out of a playoff spot. With seven games remaining the Chiefs trail the LumberKings by five games and the Kane County Cougars by 3 in the wildcard.
The LumberKings got on the board early, scoring three in the first off starter Ryan Searle. James Jones singled and advanced to second on a Nick Franklin single. Mickey Wiswall doubled to left center to score Jones and put Franklin on third. Following a pair of strikeouts it looked like the Chiefs would minimize the damage but Searle dropped the ball at first on a throw from Justin Bour for an error that allowed Franklin and Wiswall to score, making it 3-0 Clinton.
The Chiefs cut into the lead in the third off starter Taylor Stanton. Jose Guevara singled and advanced to second on an Anthony Giansanti single. Hak-Ju Lee singled to load the bases and Logan Watkins grounded into a double play that scored Guevara to make it 3-1. Stanton retired Matt Cerda on a line out to center to end the frame with a runner on third base.
Peoria got another run back in the fourth inning. Justin Bour doubled and advanced to third on a Jae-Hoon Ha single. Nelson Perez grounded into a fielders' choice but hustled down the line to prevent the double play and allow Bour to score, cutting the Clinton lead to 3-2.
The Chiefs collected a pair of singles in the fifth inning with one out as rain started to fall. With Lee at second and Watkins at first, both runners took off on a full-count pitch to Cerda. Cerda was called out on strikes and Lee stopped running on his way to third, eventually tagged out in a rundown to end the threat.
Clinton added a pair of runs in the sixth off reliever Luis Liria. Henry Contreras walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a Mario Martinez single. Another wild pitch allowed Contreras to score and put Martinez on second before a 35-minute rain delay. Following the delay Matt Cerione walked and Gabriel Noriega reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Jones grounded into a fielders' choice to score Martinez and give the LumberKings a lead 5-2.
The LumberKings added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth off reliever Manolin DeLeon. Vince Catricala singled and came around to score on a Tim Morris double. Morris advanced to third on a groundout to short off the bat of Contreras and scored on a Cerione double to make it 7-2.
Searle (6-8) went five innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Liria went two innings and gave up two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out two. He also threw three wild pitches. DeLeon pitched the final two innings and surrendered two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out five.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game: Jae-Hoon (RF)- Ha went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active streak on the team.
