Altoona Curve News Release
IZQUIERDO STRONG AGAIN, OFFENSE POSTS 15 HITS IN 10-3 CURVE WIN
ALTOONA-- Hansel Izquierdo gave up a pair of runs in the first inning before settling in to hold Bowie off the board over his final six innings work and the Curve offense pounded out 15 hits--including four by Craig Stansberry--in a 10-3 win over the Baysox Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark.
Izquierdo (5-4) improved to 3-0 in his four starts with the Curve after returning to the club on July 21st from Triple-A Indianapolis. The right-hander has yielded just six earned runs in 28 1/3 innings of work over his last four outings. In seven innings, he allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out a season-high eight batters.
Meanwhile, the Curve offense took over in the bottom of the second inning against Bowie starter Matt Bailie, who was signed as a minor league free agent earlier in the day by Baltimore and assigned to the Baysox' roster. Leadoff man Adam Boeve led off the frame with a single and came home when the next batter, Jose Bautista, clubbed his 20th home run of the season over the left-field wall to even the game at 2-2. Bautista joined Josh Bonifay as the only other Curve player with 20 homers this season and became just the seventh player in club history to reach that mark.
The next batter, Jorge Cortes, followed Bautista's longball with a home run of his own to deep right-center to give the Curve a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Altoona increased its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the third and one more in the fourth to chase Bailie (0-1) after just 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander, who had been pitching for the Schaumburg Flyers of the independent Northern League before joining Bowie, was tagged for six runs on eight hits.
After carrying a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth, the Curve put the game away at 10-3 with three runs, highlighted by Boeve's two-run single.
Stansberry paced the Curve attack by going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Boeve and Rajai Davis contributed three hits each with Davis scoring three runs. Bautista also knocked in a run in the bottom of the third to finish the game with three RBI's.
The Curve will look to complete a three-game sweep of the Baysox Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark. Right-hander Eddie Candelario (3-3, 3.95) will take the mound against Baysox' ace Hayden Penn (5-5, 4.22) in the 7:05 PM contest. The 20-year old Penn went 2-2 in seven starts with the Orioles earlier this season.
