Stampede Top Jam For Fourth Straight Win

BOISE, Idaho (April 11, 2008) - Idaho utilized a strong defensive performance in the second half to defeat the Bakersfield Jam 98-90 for their fourth straight win. Idaho improves to 35-14 on the season, as six players scored in double figures, including an outstanding all around performance by Mike Taylor. Taylor was one rebound and one assist shy of a triple-double and scored 19 points in the victory.

"I was very impressed with the leadership of Mike Taylor tonight." Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates said. "If we continue to get stops defensively and consistently get open shots, I like our chances."

Luke Jackson led all scorers in the game with 22 points coming off the Stampede bench, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw stride. Jason Ellis had a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a season high 25 rebounds. Ellis controlled the boards for the Stampede, helping the Stampede outscore Bakersfield in the paint 54-32. Brent Petway scored 17 points, followed by Cory Violette who added 12 points.

The Jam started the game on fire, shooting 61% (11-18) from the field, allowing them to build a 30-21 lead over the Stampede at the end of the first quarter. Bakersfield continued to play well in the second quarter and led by 14 points with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Stampede began to chip away at that lead and went into halftime down by six points.

The Stampede started out the third quarter by going on a 17-5 run to take a 62-57 lead with 5:29 remaining in the third. The Stampede played outstanding defense in the quarter to gain the advantage, holding the Jam to only 14 points on 30% (6-20) shooting.

A well-balanced team effort helped the Stampede hold onto their lead throughout the entire fourth quarter, to help them gain the victory.

Bakersfield guard Mateen Cleaves had a team-high 20 points, while Michael Cuffee had a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Stampede will play their final regular season game at home tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against the Iowa Energy. On Friday, April 18th, Idaho will have a home playoff game against a team that has yet to be determined. Bakersfield will head back home for their final game of the season as they face the Anaheim Arsenal.
