Los Angeles D-Fenders News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development league dropped their third consecutive game and final home game of the season, 109-101, to the Anaheim Arsenal Friday afternoon at STAPLES Center.
Los Angeles (32-17), already locked into the fourth seed in the 2008 NBA D-League Playoffs presented by Delta Airlines, built a six point lead early in the first quarter, but dug themselves a deep hole early in the first half by committing 17 first-half turnovers. After being outscored by 12 in the second quarter, the D-Fenders went into the locker room trailing 58-43.
"It was just a horrible first half," said D-Fenders Head Coach Dan Panaggio. "We weren't ready to play and we need to start brining it everyday, be disciplined, and be ready to play."
Los Angeles, down by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, was unable to complete the second-half comeback, pulling it to 79-82 early in the fourth. Los Angeles was saddled with turnover problems and foul trouble throughout the game. The D-Fenders were whistled for 42 personal fouls in the game while Anaheim was only called for 21 total fouls. Anaheim attempted 57 free throws in the contest, 27 in the fourth quarter compared to only 22 for Los Angeles.
All five Anaheim starters scored in double figures with Arsenal guard Will Blalock leading the way with 24. Anaheim center Marcus Campbell continued his strong play against Los Angeles, adding 17 points while grabbing a team high 13 rebounds.
The D-Fenders were led by Coby Karl's game high 29 points. Karl, on assignment from the Los Angeles Lakers, hit 12 of his 13 free throws and collected seven rebounds and two steals in the loss. Los Angeles forward Brandon Wallace chipped in with a double-double, recording 15 points, 13 boards, and two rejections.
"We did a nice job of settling down," Arsenal Head Coach Reggie Geary added. "We were able to get some guys going off the bench and we did a good job of ending the first half. We were able to get a little more focused defensively."
The D-Fenders travel to Utah for a Saturday night showdown with the Flash in their final game of the regular season. Anaheim will head north to face-off with the Bakersfield Jam on Saturday.
