Stampede Hold On Against Energy To End Slide

BOISE, Idaho, February 19, 2009 - Jason Ellis came off the bench to score 16 points to go with 10 rebounds as the Idaho Stampede defeated the Iowa Energy 109-104 in Boise on Thursday night.

Idaho utilized a well-balanced team effort, finishing with eight players scoring in double-figures. Luke Jackson just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Brent Petway led all Stampede scorers with 18 points and played strong defensively, blocking five shots. Lance Allred added 13 points, while Lanny Smith and Roberto Bergersen each scored 11 points. Dwayne Jones and Kevin Burleson dropped in 10 points apiece.

In a see-saw battle, which featured eight lead changes and six ties, the two teams were knotted up at halftime 59-59. The Stampede managed to gain an 85-82 advantage going into the final quarter of play. Idaho capitalized on the lead in the fourth, opening the quarter with a 17-6 run, giving them a 104-91 lead with 3:52 remaining. Iowa answered with a 13-3 run of their own capped by a three-pointer by Othyus Jeffers, narrowing the gap to three points with 17 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws with 12 seconds left by Brent Petway sealed the victory for the Stampede.

"Our bench was huge for us tonight," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "Our entire team held it together and put forth the effort needed to beat a really good opponent."

Demetris Nichols and Curtis Stinson led all scorers in the game, finishing with 24 points apiece. Jeffers posted 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Anthony Tolliver and Patrick Sanders added 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Idaho travels to Reno for back-to-back games against the Bighorns on Saturday and Sunday night. Iowa will continue their road trip against the Utah Flash in Orem on Saturday.
