Jam Takes Out Division-Leading Toros 102-97

(Bakersfield, Calif., February 19, 2009) - Bakersfield's Mateen Cleaves led the way with key free throws late to lift the Bakersfield Jam to a 102-97 victory over the visiting Austin Toros.

The Jam and Toros combined for six lead changes in the first half as Bakersfield took a 48-47 lead into the half. Austin's Pops Mensah-Bonsu went 8-for-10 from the field in the first half while Nick Lewis and Jeff Trepagnier of the Jam both contributed 13 points each to give Bakersfield the halftime advantage.

The game continued in the same manner through the second half before Bakersfield pulled away, taking a six point lead on a Mateen Cleaves one-and-one at 98-92. Cleaves, in his first game back from injury, scored 19 points and 11 assists in his return to the lineup.

Austin's Marcus Williams and Mohammed Abukar led all scorers with 23 points apiece, while Mensah-Bonsu added 11 rebounds on the night. Bakersfield benefitted from a 21 point night from Lewis and an additional 20 points from Derrick Byars.

The Jam inproves to 18-14 on the season while Austing falls to 21-9 on the year.

Bakersfield hosts the Rio Grande ValleyVipers on Saturday, February 21st at 8:00pm.
