St. Cloud Rox Fall in Valiant Effort to Mankato, 12-11

Mankato, Minn. - The St. Cloud Rox took to the road Thursday for a two game series against the Mankato MoonDogs. The Rox fell short after making a huge comeback by a final score of 12-11.

The MoonDogs took an early 4-0 lead over St. Cloud in the bottom of the first as they score one run off a single and a three-run home run.

St. Cloud would make it a 4-1 game in the top of the second as Dustin Breshears reached first on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on a ground out by Clay Williamson to be in scoring position. Brad Strong would follow singling to right field scoring Breshears but then was putout on a 9-6-3 for the third out of the inning.

Mankato would match the Rox scoring one run in the bottom of the second extending their lead 5-1.

Alex McRae hit a lead off single to left field for the Rox in the top of the third to start the inning off right. Vincent Jackson would follow with a double to center field scoring McRae to trail the MoonDogs 5-2. Tim Colwell was next up to bat reaching first on an error by the second baseman for another run to now trail Mankato by two.

The MoonDogs' second batter would hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to build on their lead making it a 7-3.

Scoring was stagnant for a couple innings until the Rox posted two run in the top of the sixth inning. Strong would get the bats going with a lead off single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a stolen base. Vincent Jackson posted a single to left field on one out to score Strong and then advanced to second on an error by the left fielder and continued to third. The Rox' Chris Paul would hit a sacrifice fly out to center field scoring Jackson to make it a 7-5 game.

Mankato would again answer the Rox in the bottom of the sixth posting three runs for a 10-5 lead.

Both teams would post a run in the seventh inning going into the eighth with the MoonDogs leading the Rox 11-6.

St. Cloud had a huge eighth inning at the plate going through the batting order. Vincent Jackson was the lead off batter for the Rox as he hit a single to left field. Paul and Tim Colwell would follow each hitting singles to center field loading the bases. With one out on the board for the Rox it was Charlie Morgan up to bat blasting a two-run single to center field making it a 11-7 game.

Blake Headley broke the center field single streak hitting a single to left field to score Colwell. Williamson would load the bases again for the Rox earning a walk. Strong followed reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Morgan with Williamson on the putout. Adam Martin would single to center field to score the Rox fifth run of the inning to tie the game up at 11 each.

The MoonDogs were able to score a run in the bottom of the eighth to regain a 12-11 lead over the Rox.

In the top of the ninth with two outs on the board things started to go the Rox way as Luke Weber and Morgan both earned walks and Headley posted a single to third base to load the bases. Unfortunately the Rox were unable to score earning their third out on the next at bat.

Earning the start on the mound for the Rox was Kyle Murray pitching 2.0 innings to be relieved by Bryce Jackson for 3.0 innings and Michael Healey for 2.0 innings. Jason Hoppe would come in for one inning on the mound to earn the loss for the Rox.

The St. Cloud Rox (12-17, 12-17 North) and the Mankato MoonDogs (16-13, 16-13 North) will be back in action Friday night for game two at Franklin Rogers Park. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
