La Crosse Loggers News Release
LA CROSSE, WI -- It wasn't a typical evening at the Lumberyard. With first place on the line and just six games remaining in the first half, the atmosphere was nothing short of playoff-esque.
La Crosse starter Steve Hagen (Wooster College) continued to impress in a Loggers uniform.
Hagen surrendered a 2-run first inning home run to Chinooks center fielder Harrison Bader. After Bader's big fly, Hagen settled down and retired 19 of the last 22 batters he faced. The junior scattered five hits and no walks, while striking out five.
The Loggers trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Connor Teykl (Rice) and Austin Rei (Washington) were retired consecutively to begin the frame. With two strikes, Eric Toole (Iowa) ripped a single--his second of the game--to right field. That was just the beginning.
Two pitches later Mike Nadratowski (Grand Valley State) hit Joe Greenfield's fastball into left field, putting two runners on for Johnny Bekakis (Long Beach State).
Bekakis, who already had homered in the bottom of the third, worked the count to a batter-friendly 3-1. The next pitch, which would be Greenfield's last of the game, landed somewhere far over Copeland Park's left field fence.
With a 4-3 lead and an electric crowd, Jonathan Van Eaton (Memphis) worked a scoreless top of the eighth. Van Eaton has yet to allow a run in over four innings of work this summer.
Logger manager Jason Nell called upon another Memphis Tiger in the ninth: Craig Caufield. The freshman pitched a one-two-three inning, capped off by back-to-back strikeouts. The save was Caufield's fifth thus far.
Nadratowski, Bekakis, Kevin Zak (GVS), Teykl and Toole all finished with multiple hits in the Loggers (19-11) 4-3 victory over Lakeshore (18-11).
The Loggers will be back in action tomorrow at Wisconsin Rapids. The Kwik Trip Pregame Show will begin at 5:30 with first pitch being schedule for 6:05. Tune into the Loggers Radio Network where Micah Schroeder and Nick Rytilahti will bring you all of the action.
