Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Altoona's offense overcame an early 6-0 deficit to tie the game in the seventh only to go on and see Richmond score three times in the eighth in an eventual, 10-7, loss on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Max Moroff was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk to run his on-base streak to 21 games.
The early stages of the game where characterized by uncharacteristic spotty defense from the Curve, who made a total of three errors that wound up leading to four unearned runs. Trailing 6-0, the Curve began their quest to tie the game in the bottom of the third when they scored three times off Squirrels starter Chris Stratton. An RBI single for Keon Broxton, an RBI double for Moroff and an RBI single for Willy Garcia plated three runs to cut the deficit to three.
Altoona added another on a sacrifice fly in the fifth when Garcia drove the ball out to deep right field and Mac Williamson made a terrific play to catch it on the warning track. Broxton scored from third before Moroff was doubled off from second base and it was a 6-4 game.
Richmond grabbed a run in the top of the seventh to widen the lead but the Curve came back to tie it in the bottom half. Gift Ngoepe singled for the second time in the game to start the inning before a walk to pinch hitter Eric Wood put two on with no outs.
Richmond went into the bullpen to grab Pedro Rodriguez (2-1) and he came in to walk Broxton to load the bases. Moroff delivered a sac fly to score Ngoepe to pull the Curve within two. Wood scored on a wild pitch before Garcia hit a ball to short that was mishandled by newly-entered Rando Moreno and it permitted Broxton to score to tie the game.
With the game back even, Jeremy Bleich (0-1) came in to walk the first two batters of the eighth before a fielder's choice off the bat of Kelby Tomlinson retired Jackson Williams at third for the first out. Javier Herrera singled back through the middle to give the Squirrels the lead for good before Mac Williamson doubled in a pair to widen the lead.
A mild threat for the Curve occurred in the eighth but Richmond was able to keep the Curve off the scoreboard.
Starter Chad Kuhl was the beneficiary of some tough luck on Tuesday but did receive a no decision in the game. In his six innings, he allowed six runs but only three of those six were earned due to the two errors by the Curve behind him in the field. John Kuchno was also a victim of an unearned run later in the ballgame due to an error.
The Curve (15-8) look to flip the page on the last two days in the 6 p.m. game on Wednesday night with Richmond (5-17). It'll be a Wing + Wine Wednesday at the ballpark with 50-cent wings and specials on glasses of Moscato and Merlot on the concourse. It'll also be a Four-Pack Wednesday with four tickets, four hot dogs and four regular sodas for $39.
RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-0, 0.79) will start for the Curve on Wednesday night while Richmond sends LHP Jack Snodgrass (1-3, 6.16) to the mound. Gates open at 5 p.m. while airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
