Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BOWIE, MD - Roger Keischnick homered twice and the Flying Squirrels posted their league-best sixth shutout of the season as Richmond rolled over the Bowie Baysox, 5-0, in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium.
For the second consecutive day, Kiechnick delivered the lead to Richmond with a two-run home run in the first inning. With Brandon Crawford aboard via a single, Kieschnick belted a 3-1 pitch from Bowie starter Ryohei Tanaka over the wall in right-center field for a 2-0 lead. Kieschnick also blasted a two-run homer in the first inning on Tuesday night.
Daryl Maday battled while conceding five hits and two walks through the first four innings, but kept Bowie at bay, and the Squirrels carried their lead into the fifth inning.
With Tanaka still on the hill, Kieschnick struck again. Thomas Neal had bunted his way aboard with one down when Kieschnick wrapped a low-flying two-run home run just inside the right-field foul pole to double Richmond's advantage to 4-0. Kieschnick became just the second Flying Squirrel to record multi-homer game, joining Neal who accomplished the feat against Reading at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Squirrels tacked on a final run against Tanaka before he departed in the sixth inning. Tanaka hit Jackson Williams with a pitch to start the inning, and Williams moved around to third on a pair of ground-outs. Darren Ford brought him in for a 5-0 lead and chased Tanaka with an infield-single back up the middle.
Tanaka (2-4) endured the loss, conceding five earned runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. The defeat marked his fourth consecutive loss, and second to Richmond.
Meanwhile, Maday (6-0) settled in nicely and worked perfect innings in the fourth and fifth. Ultimately, he lasted through 5 2/3 innings, keeping the Baysox off the scoreboard on just five hits and two walks. He struck out three as he earned his sixth consecutive win, tying him for the league-lead in wins with Altoona's Jared Hughes.
Andy Sisco, Rafael Cova and Wilmin Rodriguez combined to complete Richmond's league-leading sixth shutout of the season. Bowie stranded 15 runners in the win for the Squirrels, which netted them the series victory two games to one.
The Flying Squirrels will open a four-game series at The Diamond in Richmond against the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. RHP David Mixon (3-1, 2.27) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Tim Alderson (2-0, 6.14) for Altoona.
